Summary

Virtual multiple mini-interviews (vMMI) showed no overall score differences compared to in-person interviews (ipMMI). However, underrepresented minority (URiM) females performed significantly better in the virtual format, suggesting complex interactions between gender and race in admissions.

Background:

  • The multiple mini-interview (MMI) is a widely used admissions tool.
  • The shift to virtual multiple mini-interviews (vMMI) during the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an examination of its comparability to in-person MMI (ipMMI).
  • Understanding performance differences across demographic groups in different interview modalities is crucial for equitable admissions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare applicant performance in virtual (vMMI) versus in-person (ipMMI) settings.
  • To investigate differences in performance based on applicant-reported gender identity and minority status (underrepresented in medicine - URiM).
