Masking and Demasking Agents01:19

Masking and Demasking Agents

2.3K
EDTA titrations may necessitate masking and demasking agents to temporarily protect a particular metal ion in a mixture from the EDTA reaction. These agents facilitate the sequential analysis of the metal ions by forming stable complexes with some—but not all—metal ions during certain steps.
There are many masking agents, such as cyanide, fluoride, triethanolamine, thiourea, and 2,3-bis(sulfanyl)propan-1-ol (formerly 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol), with the masking agent chosen based on...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.2K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

29
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity01:23

Influence of Parents and Peers on Identity

43
Adolescence is a pivotal period of identity formation, during which individuals begin to answer questions central to their sense of self, such as "Who am I?" and "Who do I hope to become?" Both parents and peers play critical roles in guiding adolescents through this complex developmental phase.
Parental Influence on Identity Development
Parents serve as primary guides and managers in an adolescent's life, offering support instrumental in decision-making and personal growth....

Strategies for Assessing and Addressing Confounding01:25

Strategies for Assessing and Addressing Confounding

82
Confounding is a critical issue in epidemiological studies, often leading to misleading conclusions about associations between exposures and outcomes. It occurs when the relationship between the exposure and the outcome is mixed with the effects of other factors that influence the outcome. Given that, addressing confounding is of high importance for drawing accurate inferences in research.
Confounding can be addressed at both the design phase of a study and through analytical methods after data...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Education
    • Admissions Processes
    • Health Equity

    Background:

    • Holistic review aims to reduce systemic barriers in medical school admissions.
    • Limited literature models holistic admissions, focusing on mission and value alignment.
    • This study examines a blinded holistic admissions approach.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To model a mission-aligned holistic admissions process.
    • To analyze applicant characteristics by admission status.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a holistic review in identifying mission-aligned and diverse candidates.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 2,027 secondary applications for the 2022-2023 cycle at UT Tyler School of Medicine.
    • Categorization of applicants into interviewed (n=239) and accepted (n=46) groups.
    • Inclusion of data on geographic ties, mission alignment, academic preparation, and Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer) scores.

    Main Results:

    • Mission commitment negatively correlated with geographic ties and academic preparation in non-interviewed and interviewed groups.
    • Higher geographic ties correlated with lower academic preparation and CASPer scores in the interviewed group.
    • Accepted students showed higher representation of those from low socioeconomic backgrounds (free/reduced lunch, Pell Grant eligibility, low family income).

    Conclusions:

    • The mission-aligned holistic admissions process was successfully implemented.
    • Accepted students demonstrated strong alignment with the institution's mission.
    • The process effectively included students from traditionally underrepresented groups.
