The coaching-centered sub-internship (CCSI) improved medical student education, fostering essential skills and readiness for residency. This model enhances learning experiences and professional development for future physicians.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Graduate Medical Education
- Clinical Skills Development
Background:
- Traditional medical sub-internships face challenges in providing adequate clinical exposure and feedback.
- Learner variability in traditional settings hinders skill development for residency preparation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the educational experience of medical students in a novel coaching-centered sub-internship (CCSI).
- To assess the impact of the CCSI model on resident uncovered ward services.
Main Methods:
- A coaching-centered sub-internship (CCSI) was implemented from 2017-2022.
- Sub-interns worked in small teams with frequent attending coaching and participated in targeted skills workshops.
- 73 sub-interns and 39 hospitalists participated in the study at an urban university-affiliated hospital.
Main Results:
- Students rated the CCSI significantly higher than traditional rotations (4.87/5 vs. 4.63/5).
- The CCSI fostered coaching, autonomy, accurate assessments, professional development, and a growth mindset.
- 91.8% of students responded, indicating high satisfaction with the educational experience.
Conclusions:
- The CCSI model effectively prepares medical students for internship by cultivating necessary skills and mindset.
- This coaching-centered approach offers a beneficial model for medical student education in various settings.
