Background:

The ventral stream is linked to visual perception, while the dorsal stream is linked to visuomotor actions.
Garner interference is often used to distinguish between these two visual processing pathways.
Previous studies assumed perceptual tasks are affected by Garner interference, while visuomotor tasks are not.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the validity of Garner interference as a marker for distinguishing ventral and dorsal visual streams.
To address empirical shortages in comparing manual estimation (ventral) and grasping (dorsal) tasks regarding Garner interference.
To explore the modulation of Garner interference by manipulating response timing in manual estimation tasks.

Main Methods:

Two improved replications of Garner interference experiments comparing manual size estimation and grasping.
Two additional experiments manipulating the temporal profile of responses in manual estimation.
A comprehensive literature review of studies on Garner interference and perception-action dissociation.

Main Results:

Smaller effects of Garner interference were observed in manual estimation than previously reported.
The temporal manipulation of responses did not provide conclusive evidence for a perception-action dissociation.
Existing evidence is insufficient to support a clear ventral-dorsal stream dissociation based on Garner interference.

Conclusions:

The assumption that Garner interference reliably differentiates between ventral and dorsal visual stream processing is not strongly supported by current evidence.
The perception-action dissociation, as indicated by Garner interference, requires further investigation and validation.
Future research should focus on refining experimental paradigms to better understand the relationship between visual perception, action, and cortical pathways.
