Exercise capacity in subjects with high oxygen affinity.

E Länsimies, S Hyödynmaa, R Lahtinen

    Clinical Physiology (Oxford, England)
    |January 1, 1985

    Summary

Patients with high hemoglobin oxygen affinity (Hb-Linköping variant) showed similar exercise tolerance but altered oxygen dissociation during exercise. Further studies are needed to understand potential long-term metabolic effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Physiology
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • A novel hemoglobin variant, Hb-Linköping, presents with high oxygen affinity.
    • Understanding its physiological impact during exercise is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate exercise capacity and hemodynamic responses in individuals with Hb-Linköping.
    • To investigate the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation characteristics during exercise.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten patients with Hb-Linköping and ten controls underwent maximal bicycle ergometer testing.
    • Measurements included exercise capacity, cardiac parameters, and hemoglobin dissociation curve analysis.

    Main Results:

    • Exercise capacity and cardiac tolerance were comparable between patients and controls.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Hemoglobin dissociation curve showed a leftward shift at rest and a reduced rightward shift post-exercise in patients.
  • Lactate accumulation was similar, but hydrogen ion production was higher in patients during exercise.
  • Conclusions:

    • Despite high hemoglobin oxygen affinity, patients exhibit similar acute exercise tolerance and cardiovascular load.
    • Altered hydrogen ion production suggests potential metabolic adaptations requiring further investigation.
    • Long-term follow-up is recommended to assess potential effects of relative hypoxia adaptation.
