Background:

High rates of sexual harassment were previously reported among ophthalmologists.
Increased initiatives to combat sexual harassment have been implemented.
A comparison of sexual harassment rates in 2018 and 2023 is warranted.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the rates and characteristics of sexual harassment in ophthalmology between 2018 and 2023 survey respondents.
To investigate the rates of gender discrimination among 2023 survey respondents.

Main Methods:

Anonymous online survey administered via Google Forms to ophthalmologists and trainees in the US and Canada.
Survey distributed through the Women in Ophthalmology email list from August 25 to September 25, 2023.
Cross-sectional, observational study design with electronic consent.

Main Results:

The overall rate of sexual harassment remained high and statistically similar between 2023 (59.5%) and 2018 (59.3%).
A significantly higher proportion of 2023 respondents reported experiencing sexual harassment within the past 5 years (62.2%) compared to 2018 respondents (47.2%).
Reporting of the most severe sexual harassment experience to an authority increased from 15.1% in 2018 to 24.1% in 2023. Additionally, 85.0% of 2023 respondents experienced gender discrimination.

Conclusions:

Sexual harassment rates in ophthalmology remain high, with a notable increase in recent experiences.
Reporting of severe incidents has increased, yet overall reporting rates remain a concern.
High prevalence of gender discrimination alongside sexual harassment necessitates validated strategies for a zero-tolerance culture.
