Nursing Clinical Information System01:27

Nursing Clinical Information System

747
Nursing Clinical Information System (NCIS)
A Nursing Clinical Information System (NCIS) is a specialized type of healthcare information system tailored to meet the unique needs of nursing practice. It incorporates the principles of nursing informatics to streamline information management and improve the quality of care delivery.
Critical attributes of NCIS include:
747
Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

1.5K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Documentation of Nursing Diagnosis01:10

Documentation of Nursing Diagnosis

1.2K
The nurse documents nursing diagnoses and enters them into the patient record. The identified patient's nursing diagnosis is either written out with a plan of care or entered into the electronic health record.
In some settings, data-driven computerized decision support systems are in place, allowing for more accurate nursing diagnoses. The database within one of these systems includes diagnostic labels defining characteristics, activities, and indicators for nursing. A nurse enters...

Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

4.8K
Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

3.2K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Summary

Nursing program course failures strongly predict lower first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates. Pre-admission GPA and Kaplan scores also correlate with success on the NCLEX-RN exam.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Higher Education
  • Health Professions Education

Background:

  • Nursing programs utilize diverse admission criteria to select qualified students.
  • High academic achievement does not guarantee success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
  • Many nursing programs employ outdated or unvalidated admission processes, highlighting the need for data-driven improvements.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify readily available variables that correlate with and predict first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates.
  • To improve nursing program admission and student support strategies through data analysis.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective quantitative descriptive design was employed.
  • Data from four cohorts of traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students were analyzed.
  • Pre-admission criteria, demographic variables, Kaplan exam scores, and nursing course failures were compared with NCLEX-RN first-attempt pass rates.

Main Results:

  • Nursing school course failure emerged as the most significant predictor of failing the NCLEX-RN on the first attempt.
  • Pre-nursing school Grade Point Average (GPA) and pre-admission Kaplan scores were statistically significant predictors of NCLEX-RN success.
  • Pre-nursing school GPA explained a greater proportion of the variance in NCLEX-RN first-time failure rates compared to other variables.

Conclusions:

  • A comprehensive review of nursing program data is essential for implementing meaningful, lasting changes.
  • Data-informed decision-making can help nursing programs move beyond superficial improvements to achieve substantial progress in student outcomes.
  • Revising admission criteria based on predictive data may enhance NCLEX-RN pass rates.
