Sensitivity, Specificity, and Predicted Value

In healthcare diagnostics, laboratory tests play a crucial role in identifying and diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions. However, interpreting test results is not always straightforward. An abnormal test result does not always confirm the presence of a disease, just as a normal result does not guarantee its absence. To assess the reliability of these diagnostic tools, healthcare practitioners rely on two key statistical indicators: sensitivity and specificity.

Skeleton and Calcium Homeostasis

4.3K
Calcium is not only the most abundant mineral in bone but also the most abundant mineral in the human body. Calcium ions are needed for bone mineralization, tooth health, heart rate regulation and strength of contraction, blood coagulation, the contraction of smooth and skeletal muscle cells, and the regulation of nerve impulse conduction. The average calcium level in the blood is about 10 mg/dL. When the body cannot maintain this level, a person will experience hypo or hypercalcemia.

    Summary

Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) secreting tumors, or VIPomas, can cause hypercalcemia and diarrhea. Early diagnosis and treatment of VIPoma are crucial for improving patient prognosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Hypercalcemia is commonly linked to primary hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, vitamin D intoxication, and granulomatous disease.

  • Neuroendocrine tumors secreting vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) are a less common cause of hypercalcemia.
  • VIPomas can present with nonspecific symptoms such as diarrhea, complicating diagnosis.
