BILATERAL SEQUENTIAL INFLAMMATORY FULL-THICKNESS MACULAR HOLES IN BIRDSHOT CHORIORETINOPATHY

Purpose:
To report a novel case of bilateral sequential full-thickness macular holes in a patient with birdshot chorioretinopathy.
Methods:
Case report.
Results:
A 57-year-old woman with birdshot chorioretinopathy undergoing systemic antiinflammatory treatment developed progressive bilateral macular atrophy and reduced visual acuity. Further progression resulted in the development of a full-thickness macular hole in her left eye, which was successfully treated with vitrectomy, internal limiting membrane peeling using the inverted flap technique, and C 3 F 8 gas injection. Unfortunately, she soon developed a full-thickness macular hole in her right eye, which was also successfully repaired by vitrectomy.
Conclusion:
Chronic posterior uveitis in birdshot chorioretinopathy can result in macular atrophy, which in our patient progressed to bilateral full-thickness macular hole formation. This complication of birdshot chorioretinopathy has never been reported before.
