Abstract:
Antimicrobial resistance is a critical One Health issue threatening animal health, human health, and environmental health. Approximately 2 decades of surveillance data indicate antimicrobial resistance is not an emerging problem among major mastitis pathogens. Antimicrobial resistance surveillance relies on routinely collecting antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) data over extended time periods from representative sample populations, and there may be barriers to routine susceptibility testing because farmers may not perceive value in AST for mastitis pathogens. Improved systematic antimicrobial resistance surveillance systems are needed to support antimicrobial stewardship.
