In adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), sleep problems do not worsen homework issues through neuropsychological deficits. However, neuropsychological functioning impacts homework problems in ADHD, irrespective of sleep issues.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Developmental Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occurs with sleep and homework problems in adolescents.
- Neuropsychological deficits are implicated in both ADHD-related sleep and homework difficulties.
- The interplay between sleep problems, homework challenges, and neuropsychological functioning in ADHD remains underexplored.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between sleep problems and homework problems in adolescents with ADHD.
- To examine the role of parent-rated behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning in this association.
- To compare these factors across adolescents with ADHD and comorbid sleep problems, ADHD only, and neurotypical controls.
Main Methods:
- Parental ratings of homework problems (HPC) and behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning (CAMEL) were collected.
- Three groups were compared: ADHD with sleep problems (n=53), ADHD only (n=24), and neurotypical adolescents (NT, n=53).
- Path analysis was employed to assess the mediating role of neuropsychological functioning indicators.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in homework problems or neuropsychological functioning were found between the ADHD with sleep problems and ADHD only groups, barring a minor difference in arousal regulation.
- Both ADHD groups exhibited more homework problems and weaker neuropsychological functioning indicators compared to the NT group.
- Weaker neuropsychological functioning indicators were associated with increased homework problems in both ADHD groups compared to NT controls.
Conclusions:
- Sleep problems in adolescents with ADHD are not linked to increased homework problems via diminished neuropsychological functioning.
- Neuropsychological functioning independently relates to homework problems in adolescents with ADHD, irrespective of sleep status.
- These findings highlight the crucial role of neuropsychological factors in managing homework difficulties for adolescents with ADHD.
