Melanoma incidence is rising worldwide and has doubled in Denmark over the past 25 years. Early detection is essential but challenging due to difficulties in diagnosing early melanomas and atypical nevi. This review discusses melanoma diagnostic processes in the Danish healthcare system, highlighting current and emerging diagnostic tools. More accurate methods are needed to improve diagnosis and minimise unnecessary excisions. Although AI shows promise in this area, it has not yet surpassed the expertise of experienced dermatologists. Public education about mole changes remains crucial, as many melanoma cases are self-detected.
