None:
Microbiology has been a mainstay of mastitis diagnostics for over 100 years. Newer techniques, including PCR and matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight, are valuable tools for diagnosing mastitis pathogens. Microbiology is the only practical method for determining treatment of individual cows for most farms. Microbiology is used in control of outbreaks by host-adapted pathogens. Screening of bulk tank milk using microbiology is used to identify host-adapted pathogens, monitor cow and milking hygiene, and determine quality of raw milk. Microbiology is used for semiquantitative culture of bedding, towels, and water. Microbiological techniques have been well described but are not standardized.
