Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease.
  • Hemoglobin (Hb) levels are often affected in RA patients.
  • The relationship between Hb and RA disease activity requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between hemoglobin levels and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  • To determine if Hb levels are an independent predictor of disease activity in RA.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 1584 adult RA patients from the Kuwait Registry for Rheumatic Diseases.
  • Patients were stratified into two groups: Hb ≤ 110 g/L (anemic) and Hb > 110 g/L (non-anemic).
  • Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate statistical methods.

Main Results:

  • Anemia (low Hb) was more prevalent in non-Kuwaiti patients compared to Kuwaiti patients.
  • Patients receiving biologic treatment were more likely to have non-anemic Hb levels.
  • Anemia was associated with a higher likelihood of increased disease activity (DAS-28 ≥ 3.2).

Conclusions:

  • Lower hemoglobin levels are an independent predictor of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Monitoring Hb levels may be important for assessing RA disease severity.
  • Findings suggest a significant link between anemia and RA disease activity.
