Background:

Documented shortages exist in the current and projected nephrology nursing workforce.
A significant contributing factor is the limited availability of clinical rotations in dialysis units for nursing students.

Purpose of the Study:

To address the critical need for nephrology nurses by developing and implementing a dialysis clinical rotation for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students.
To provide nursing students with exposure to nephrology and the benefits of professional association membership.

Main Methods:

A dialysis curriculum was created, marketed, and negotiated for BSN students.
The curriculum included lectures, patient interviews, and clinical findings reports.
The author served as faculty for the rotation.

Main Results:

The dialysis rotation has been overwhelmingly positively received by students and dialysis unit staff over two years.
The program successfully exposed nursing students to the field of nephrology.
Students were informed about the advantages of student membership in the American Nephrology Nurses Association.
