The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of knee arthritis following MLKIs.
  • To assess outcomes such as conversion to total knee arthroplasty (TKA), return to work, return to sports, and patient satisfaction after MLKI reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases.
  • A meta-analysis of seven studies involving patients undergoing MLKI reconstruction was performed.
  • Pooled incidence rates for arthritis, TKA conversion, return to work, return to sports, and patient satisfaction were calculated using random-effects models.

Main Results:

  • The pooled incidence of knee arthritis after MLKIs was 65.0% (95% CI 35.4% to 89.4%), with significant heterogeneity.
  • Conversion to TKA occurred in 9.5% (95% CI: 5.4% to 14.6%) of patients.
  • High rates were observed for return to work (93.5%), return to sports (70.8%), and patient satisfaction (82.5%).

Conclusions:

  • MLKIs are strongly associated with a high incidence of post-traumatic knee arthritis.
  • Despite arthritis development, MLKI reconstruction is an effective intervention for functional recovery, facilitating high rates of return to work, sports, and overall patient satisfaction.
