Development of an Escape Room in a Pediatric Nursing Course

Interactive learning activities are replacing rote lectures in all fields of higher education, including nursing. While much interactive learning in nursing schools is completed within a simulation or skills lab, the author of this article brought elements of simulation into the classroom. The article describes in detail the process of creating and implementing a specific form of active learning, namely, an escape room, in a prelicensure pediatric nursing course. Escape-room-style learning activities not only engage students with content; they also help students learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential to nursing.
