Cytotoxic T Cells-mediated Immune Response01:27

Cytotoxic T Cells-mediated Immune Response

7.0K
Cytotoxic T cells are a vital component of the immune system. They have the remarkable ability to identify and target antigens on infected or abnormal cells. These antigens often originate from intracellular pathogens such as viruses or abnormal proteins cancer cells produce.
Immunological surveillance is the ability of immune cells to monitor and eliminate infected cells with intracellular pathogens, neoplastically transformed cells, and cells with non-self antigens. Cytotoxic T cells and NK...

Summary

Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKL) treatment shows promise with anthracycline-free therapies, improving prognosis. However, advanced ENKL cases still face high mortality rates, indicating a need for further research.

Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKL) is a rare and aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • ENKL is the primary cause of the clinical syndrome known as fatal midline granuloma.
  • Understanding ENKL treatment outcomes is crucial for improving patient survival and quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the treatment outcomes of extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas.
  • To identify prognostic factors and treatment responses in ENKL patients.
  • To assess the impact of anthracycline-free regimens on ENKL survival.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of data from 39 patients across 15 centers.
  • Evaluation of patient characteristics, risk status, and treatment regimens.
  • Observation of treatment responses and survival outcomes.

Main Results:

  • A 53.8% complete response rate was observed with first-line therapy.
  • Median overall survival was 16 months.
  • Mortality reached 56.4% in patients with advanced disease.

Conclusions:

  • Anthracycline-free treatments have improved the prognosis for ENKL patients.
  • Despite treatment advancements, high mortality persists in advanced ENKL.
  • Further research is needed to optimize ENKL treatment strategies, particularly for advanced stages.
