Summary

Radiographic staging of thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC OA) using the Eaton-Glickel classification did not correlate with patient-reported outcomes. This suggests objective measures may not fully reflect patient experience of CMC OA severity.

Background:

  • Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC OA) is commonly staged using the Eaton-Glickel radiographic classification.
  • Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are crucial for assessing the impact of CMC OA on patients' lives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between baseline radiographic stages of thumb CMC OA and prospectively collected PROMs.
  • To determine if objective radiographic severity aligns with subjective patient experiences of pain and function.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of prospectively collected data from 85 patients (106 radiographic series) with symptomatic thumb CMC OA.
  • Radiographs were staged using the Eaton-Glickel classification by a fellowship-trained hand surgeon and a trained medical student.
  • PROMs included the Brief Michigan Hand Questionnaire, visual analog/numerical rating scales for pain, and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) modules.

  • No significant correlations were found between any PROMs and radiographic staging of thumb CMC OA.
