Aim:
To identify the strategies used by formal nursing leaders to implement and sustain Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in clinical contexts.
Background:
Formal nursing leaders are responsible for ensuring resources for implementing and sustaining EBP in clinical settings.
Methods:
A descriptive study with a qualitative approach was developed. Seventeen semistructured interviews were conducted with formal nursing leaders of three Portuguese health institutions. For data analysis, content analysis was conducted according to Bardin (2020) using the MAXQDA Analytic Pro 2022 software.
Findings:
Eight categories emerged that reflect the strategies adopted: (i) dissemination and availability of resources; (ii) reflection about clinical practice; (iii) involvement of nurses in working groups to support decision-making; (iv) monitoring and dissemination of the EBP impact; (v) dissemination and implementation of nurses' projects; (vi) partnership between academic world and the clinical practice; (vi) shared decision-making meetings; and (viii) the Nurses' job rotation.
Conclusion:
This study allowed identification of the strategies adopted by formal nursing leaders to implement and sustain EBP in three Portuguese healthcare institutions. Future studies should explore and evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies.
Summary Statement:
WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC: A culture of EBP is crucial in healthcare organization to improve health outcomes and experience, and to reduce healthcare costs. Formal nursing leaders have a key role to promote EBP.
What This Paper Adds:
This study increased knowledge about the strategies developed and/or implemented by formal nursing leaders to promote EBP implementation in three Portuguese clinical contexts.
The Implication Of This Paper:
Future research studies should focus on the effectiveness of EBP implementation strategies by formal nursing leaders and the perception of the nurses of these teams/institutions about the implementation of these strategies by their formal nursing leaders.
