    Summary

    Pulmonary function tests in healthy children aged 6-15 showed increased values with age and were higher in boys. Lung function correlated significantly with height, weight, and body surface area.

    Background:

    • Pulmonary function assessment is crucial for evaluating respiratory health in children.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine reference values for key pulmonary function parameters in healthy Indian children.
    • To investigate the relationship between pulmonary function and anthropometric measurements.
    • To develop predictive equations for pulmonary function based on height.

    Main Methods:

    • Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) including Vital Capacity (VC), Maximum Voluntary Ventilation (MVV), and Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) were measured.
    • Standard spirometry (Benidect's Roth type) and Wright's Peak Flow Meter were utilized.
    • Data collected from 261 healthy boys and 254 healthy girls aged 6–15 years.

    Main Results:

    • Pulmonary function values increased with age, with a curvilinear relationship observed for vital capacity.
    • All measured pulmonary function parameters were significantly higher in boys compared to girls.
    • Significant positive correlations were found between VC, MVV, PEFR, and anthropometric parameters (height, weight, body surface area).

    • Height-based predictive equations for VC, MVV, and PEFR were established for this population.
    • The obtained pulmonary function values were lower than Western standards but comparable to other Indian studies.
    • Findings provide valuable normative data for assessing respiratory health in Indian children.
