Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess and compare educational underemployment rates between employed college graduates with and without visual impairments.
  • To identify factors influencing underemployment among visually impaired college graduates.

  • Utilized American Community Survey data and Bureau of Labor Statistics criteria to define educational underemployment.
  • Employed logistic regression analysis to examine the relationship between visual impairment, educational attainment, and underemployment, controlling for 11 covariates.

  • Individuals with visual impairments experienced higher rates of underemployment (62.4%) compared to their non-visually impaired counterparts (55.7%).

  • Overeducation affects the general college graduate population but disproportionately impacts those with visual impairments, except for those holding master's degrees.

Conclusions:

  • Educational underemployment is a significant issue for college graduates with visual impairments, except for those with master's degrees.
  • Rehabilitation professionals must guide individuals in career goal setting, skills assessment, and strategic skill acquisition to mitigate underemployment.
