Summary

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape on dental screws reduced initial tightening force but significantly increased resistance to loosening under cyclic loading. This method may help prevent screw loosening in the oral environment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of a screw coating on preload and removal torque value (RTV).
  • To assess screw stability with and without cyclic load (CL).
  • To determine if coatings improve untightening resistance.

Main Methods:

  • Ninety implant-abutment-screw complexes were tested under cyclic load (CL) and non-CL conditions.
  • Subgroups included control, GapSeal-coated, and PTFE tape-wrapped screws.
  • Preload and RTV were measured; Micro-CT and SEM analyses were performed.

Main Results:

  • PTFE tape (PG) showed significantly lower preload than control (CG) and GapSeal (GG) groups.
  • PG had significantly lower RTV under non-CL conditions.
  • Under CL, PG demonstrated significantly higher RTV compared to CG and GG.

Conclusions:

  • PTFE tape wrapping significantly reduced screw preload.
  • PTFE tape significantly increased removal torque value under cyclic loading.
  • PTFE tape may offer a viable solution to mitigate screw loosening in dental implants.
