CLINICAL EVIDENCE FROM A DERMATOLOGY CENTER ON THE TREATMENT OF VIRAL WARTS USING A 595 NM PULSED DYE LASER
Introduction:
Viral warts are common skin lesions caused by various genotypes of the human papillomavirus (HPV), with higher prevalence in children and adolescents. The virus is transmitted through direct contact or via surfaces. Among the various therapeutic options available, the use of Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) stands out, as its action is based on selective photo-thermolysis.
Objective:
This preliminary study aims to detail the patient experience, focusing on satisfaction and the effectiveness of combined PDL treatment at 595 nm with salicylic acid (SA), for palmar, plantar, and periungual warts, as well as to assess patient satisfaction levels.
Materials And Methods:
Twenty patients with viral warts (40% male, 60% female), aged between 10 and 88 years, were included. They received four to five sessions over six months using PDL with specific fluence parameters and spot size. Effectiveness was measured by analysing the percentage of total lesion removal, alongside photographic evaluation; while satisfaction was assessed through self-evaluation by each patient. Additionally, patient satisfaction perceptions were gathered through a global self-assessment.
Results:
The results showed a 90% complete clearance rate in the treated areas of the hands and feet. Thirty-five percent of the patients rated the treatment as satisfactory, while 55% reported being very satisfied with the results.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, this treatment appears to be safe, effective, and well-tolerated by patients.
