Counterfeiting of healthcare products is a global scourge affecting pharmaceuticals, medical devices and cosmetics, especially perfumes. To date, perfumes have been the most well-known counterfeit cosmetics. The aim of this study is to demonstrate counterfeit sunscreens without any photoprotective efficacy. Two creams bought online were tested. Firstly, sun protection factor (SPF) and protection factor ultraviolet A (PF-UVA) efficacy indices were determined using an in vitro method. Secondly, the dosage of UV filters was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The SPF and PF-UVA values were equal to 1, indicating a lack of photoprotection. The creams studied do not contain any UV filter and therefore pose a significant risk to users when exposed to the sun. Counterfeit sunscreen products expose their users to serious consequences as they do not offer any protection.
