Insights
Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) significantly impact children
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Neurogastroenterology
- Child Psychology
Background:
- Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) are prevalent in children.
- These conditions significantly affect the quality of life for both children and their caregivers.
- Current management often requires a comprehensive approach.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight the importance of a biopsychosocial approach in managing pediatric DGBI.
- To emphasize treatments targeting the gut-brain axis.
- To advocate for improved access and acceptance of specialized care.
Main Methods:
- Screening for biological and environmental triggers.
- Implementing treatments focused on the gut-brain axis.
- Utilizing a psychogastroenterology specialist model.
Main Results:
- Biopsychosocial interventions targeting the gut-brain axis show significant symptom improvement.
- Specialized care can lead to better outcomes for various gastrointestinal diseases.
- The approach addresses the complex interplay of factors in DGBI.
Conclusions:
- A biopsychosocial framework is essential for treating pediatric DGBI.
- Gut-brain axis-targeted therapies offer substantial benefits.
- Increased acceptance and accessibility of psychogastroenterology are crucial for advancing care.
Abstract:
Disorders of gut brain interaction (DGBI) are common disorders that can have a large effect on quality of life of children and their caregivers. These disorders are best treated using a biopsychosocial approach that incorporates screening for biological and environmental triggers and implementing treatments that target the gut-brain axis. These treatments, best offered by a psychogastroenterology specialist, can offer significant improvement to symptoms for many gastrointestinal diseases. Acceptance of these treatments and improving access are needed to further care of children with DGBIs.
