Paediatric Ocular Sarcoidosis - Clinical Profiles from a Tertiary Eye Care Centre in South India

We aim to look at the clinical profile in paediatric ocular sarcoidosis in a tertiary eye centre from South India.

Retrospective study between 2012 and 2024.

A total of 29 cases of paediatric ocular sarcoidosis including 19 cases of late onset sarcoid and 10 cases of early onset sarcoid/Blau syndrome were retrieved from our medical database. There was no significant association with age and gender in both groups. Children with Blau syndrome were first presented to a rheumatologist and were associated with systemic manifestations than the late onset sarcoid group (p = 0.002). Bilaterality and granulomatous panuveitis were the most common presentations in both the groups. Corneal involvement (p = 0.001) and depigmented chorioretinal scars (p = 0.048) were significantly more common in the Blau syndrome group. The response was good in 79.2% with no inflammation at the time of the last follow-up. There was a significant improvement in the best corrected visual acuity at final follow-up in the late onset sarcoid group (p = 0.001).

Paediatric ocular sarcoidosis is underreported in India. This series highlights the clinical profiles in the two types of paediatric ocular sarcoidosis.
