Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

909
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

5.3K
Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.

Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.6K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Vision01:24

Vision

55.3K
Vision is the result of light being detected and transduced into neural signals by the retina of the eye. This information is then further analyzed and interpreted by the brain. First, light enters the front of the eye and is focused by the cornea and lens onto the retina—a thin sheet of neural tissue lining the back of the eye. Because of refraction through the convex lens of the eye, images are projected onto the retina upside-down and reversed.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics
    • Computer Vision
    • Cybersecurity

    Background:

    • Privacy concerns in digital imaging are increasing.
    • Existing privacy methods often compromise data utility.
    • Computer vision (CV) tasks require high-quality image data.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop a novel pre-capture privacy optical system.
    • To jointly optimize this system with a CV task.
    • To achieve a balance between privacy preservation and CV performance.

    Main Methods:

    • A metasurface-based optical system was designed for pre-capture image degradation.
    • The system was co-designed with a binary classification CV model.
    • Performance was evaluated against both privacy attackers and the CV model using obscured and unobscured images.

    Main Results:

    • Privacy attacker accuracy dropped from 75.4% to 17.5% with obscured images.
    • CV task performance decreased from 95.7% average precision (AP) to 67.0% AP.
    • The joint optimization successfully favored CV performance while enhancing privacy.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed co-design scheme effectively enhances pre-capture privacy.
    • Metasurface optics offer a viable solution for privacy-preserving CV.
    • This approach demonstrates a practical trade-off between privacy and data utility.
