Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Summary

Patient compliance in orthodontic treatment is similar for both aligners and fixed appliances during the first year. Age and gender do not significantly impact cooperation with either orthodontic aligners or fixed appliances.

  • Orthodontic treatment success relies on patient cooperation.
  • Understanding factors influencing compliance is crucial for achieving desired outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare patient compliance in the first year of orthodontic treatment between aligners and fixed appliances.
  • To assess the influence of appliance type on patient cooperation.

Main Methods:

  • 39 participants were randomized into orthodontic aligners (OA) or fixed appliances (FA) groups.
  • Patient compliance was measured using the Orthodontic Patient Cooperation Scale (OPCS) at 3, 6, and 12 months.
  • Psychosocial profiles (anxiety, stress) were also assessed and compared between groups.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in patient compliance was found between orthodontic aligners and fixed appliances.
  • Patient compliance remained similar throughout the first 12 months, irrespective of appliance type.
  • Neither patient age nor gender significantly correlated with compliance levels.

Conclusions:

  • The type of orthodontic appliance (aligners vs. fixed) does not influence patient compliance.
  • Patient age and gender are not significant factors affecting compliance in orthodontic treatment.
