How plants respond to salt stress: Lessons form RBOHs

RBOH is called respiratory burst oxidase homolog is one of the key enzymes in producing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Studies have shown that ROS (such as ·O2-, H2O2) are widely involved in plant growth development and response to various biological and abiotic stresses. In recent years, with the gradual deepening of research, more and more plant NOX/RBOH members have been identified, and their biological functions and participating signal regulatory pathways have been revealed. The purpose of this review is to summarize the whole pathway that the expression of one or more genes upstream and downstream of RBOH proteins directly or indirectly stimulates RBOH proteins to regulate ROS outburst, ROS clearance and inter-cellular transfer. The structure and function, expression regulation, ROS signaling and clearance of RBOH family were discussed in order to provide reference for further study and utilization of RBOH family in plant response to abiotic stress.
