Stressful life events, not just traumatic ones, may cause Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms in individuals with mild intellectual disabilities (MID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF). No significant differences in PTSD symptoms or daily functioning were found between groups exposed to traumatic versus stressful events.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry and Psychology
- Intellectual Disability Research
- Trauma Studies
Background:
- Research indicates both traumatic and stressful events can cause PTSD symptoms in the general population.
- Limited research exists on this in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID).
- The DSM-5-TR Criterion A for PTSD is crucial for people with mild intellectual disabilities (MID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) due to their vulnerability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare PTSD symptoms and daily life functioning impairment (IDLF) in individuals with MID-BIF following traumatic versus stressful index events.
- To investigate the impact of different stressor types on PTSD symptomology and functional outcomes in this population.
Main Methods:
- The Diagnostic Interview Trauma and Stressors-Intellectual Disability (DITS-ID) was used.
- 54 participants with MID-BIF were assessed.
- Bayesian equivalence testing compared PTSD symptoms and IDLF scores between groups exposed to traumatic (n=22) and stressful (n=32) index events.
Main Results:
- Data suggested minimal to no difference in the mean number of PTSD symptoms between the traumatic and stressful event groups.
- Similarly, no significant differences were observed in the mean impairment of daily life functioning (IDLF) scores.
- Observed differences in PTSD symptoms and IDLF scores were small, ranging from 0.00 to 0.87.
Conclusions:
- No clinically significant differences in PTSD symptoms or IDLF were found between individuals exposed to traumatic versus stressful events.
- Stressful life events may be sufficient to trigger PTSD symptoms in individuals with MID-BIF.
- Findings challenge the strict reliance on Criterion A for PTSD diagnosis in vulnerable populations like those with MID-BIF.
