Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated virtual interviews for Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO) training from 2020-2023.
  • The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) recommended a return to in-person interviews in 2024.
  • Applicant perspectives on the 2024 in-person CGSO interviews were surveyed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate applicant preferences regarding in-person versus virtual interviews for the 2024 CGSO Match.
  • To understand applicant perceptions of the value and effectiveness of in-person interviews.

Main Methods:

  • A voluntary, anonymous survey with 31 questions was distributed to matched CGSO applicants post-2024 Match.
  • 55 matched applicants responded, yielding a 75.3% response rate.

Main Results:

  • 80% of applicants preferred in-person interviews, with 74.5% deeming the cost "worth it".
  • 95% felt they could adequately represent themselves in-person, versus 67% virtually.
  • 96% of applicants reported interviews significantly impacted their rank list decisions.

Conclusions:
