Acupuncture may reduce pneumonia risk in stroke patients using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). More than 11 acupuncture sessions per visit showed the best preventive effect, significantly lowering pneumonia risk.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Integrative Medicine
- Pulmonology
Background:
- Stroke is a leading global cause of death.
- Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are crucial for preventing gastrointestinal bleeding in stroke patients.
- PPI use is linked to increased pneumonia risk, a complication not yet studied for acupuncture's preventive effects.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the potential of acupuncture in preventing pneumonia among stroke patients using PPIs.
- To evaluate the dose-response relationship between acupuncture sessions and pneumonia risk.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study utilized data from Tianjin Healthcare Bigdata Company (2016-2019).
- Stroke patients on PPIs were categorized into case (pneumonia) and control (no pneumonia) groups.
- Propensity score matching and logistic regression analysis were employed to assess acupuncture's impact.
Main Results:
- Pneumonia affected 11.11% of stroke patients.
- Each additional acupuncture session post-first was associated with a 6% pneumonia risk reduction (OR: 0.94, p < 0.001).
- Receiving 7-11 sessions (OR: 0.36, p < 0.001) or >11 sessions (OR: 0.21, p < 0.001) significantly reduced pneumonia risk compared to <3 sessions.
Conclusions:
- Acupuncture shows promise in reducing pneumonia risk for stroke patients on PPIs.
- Higher frequencies of acupuncture sessions, particularly over 11 per visit, demonstrated the most significant preventive effects.
- Further research into acupuncture as a preventive strategy for PPI-induced pneumonia in stroke patients is warranted.
