Background:

Bio-robots show promise for search and rescue, but require enhanced environmental interaction capabilities.
Existing research primarily focuses on intrinsic robot functions like locomotion and navigation, neglecting external environmental mapping.
Autonomous exploration and boundary mapping are crucial for effective search and rescue operations in unknown terrains.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop a novel system for a rat robot to autonomously explore and map the boundary of an unknown field.
To enable bio-robots to interact with and map their external environment.
To provide a technological foundation for practical applications like mineral prospecting and search tasks.

Main Methods:

A wearable backpack equipped with laser-ranging sensors, inertial measurement units, and an ultra-wide band (UWB) module was developed for the rat robot.
A random forest algorithm was employed for motion state classification, and a finite state machine was used for navigation algorithm development.
The Ramber-Douglas-Peucker algorithm was utilized to map the field boundary using localization and distance data.

Main Results:

The developed system effectively navigated the rat robot for autonomous field exploration and accurate border detection.
Motion state classification achieved a high accuracy rate of 97.86%.
The border detection error rate was significantly low at 5.90%.

Conclusions:

The proposed system enables autonomous exploration and boundary mapping by bio-robots, overcoming limitations in environmental interaction.
This technology offers a novel approach for bio-robots in search and rescue, mineral prospecting, and other practical applications.
The successful integration of sensors and algorithms demonstrates the potential of brain-machine interface-based bio-robots for complex environmental tasks.
