Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors in women.
  • While often asymptomatic, fibroids can cause significant symptoms impacting quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a comprehensive overview of uterine fibroid evaluation and management.
  • To discuss current pharmacologic, surgical, and interventional treatment options.

Main Methods:

  • Initial evaluation includes gynecologic history and pelvic examinations.
  • Diagnostic imaging involves transvaginal/transabdominal ultrasonography and pelvic MRI.
  • Treatment strategies are tailored to fibroid characteristics and patient preferences.

Main Results:

  • Pharmacotherapy options include hormonal therapies and contraceptives to manage bleeding.
  • Surgical and interventional procedures aim to reduce symptoms and preserve fertility.
  • Vitamin D deficiency treatment may impact fibroid size.

Conclusions:

  • Management of uterine fibroids requires a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Treatment decisions prioritize uterine and fertility preservation.
  • Further research into factors like vitamin D may offer novel therapeutic avenues.
