[Functional neurological disorders]

FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS. Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) are symptoms associated with dysfunctions in brain networks, often triggered by physical and/or psychological traumatic factors in vulnerable individuals. They include motor disorders, functional dissociative seizures, as well as speech disorders and sensory deficits. They account for 15% of neurology consultations, with a prevalence estimated between 0.5 and 1/1000. Diagnosis relies on DSM-5-TR criteria, particularly the search for positive clinical signs. Imaging studies show brain dysfunctions. Effective management requires clear diagnostic explanation and a multidisciplinary approach including physiotherapy and psychotherapy. Identifying and treating predisposing, precipitating, and perpetuating risk factors are essential to reduce patient vulnerability.
