Both anatomy and function of the temporomandibular joint are complex, and a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic lesions affect the joints, therefore it is obvious that also diagnostic imaging of these joints is intricate. In the article there are discussed imaging protocols, advantages and disadvantages of imaging modalities such as plain radiography, cone-beam computed tomography, computed tomography, MR imaging, ultrasonography as well as PET. Indications and contraindications for the application of these modalities are provided, as well.
