Gas switches are widely used to generate gigawatt pulsed power for application in high energy physics, accelerators, and directed energy systems. This research reveals a study of a sealed 1 MV, 5 kA self-discharge spark gas switch with the improvement of breakdown stability and operation lifetime. 400 000 successive 50 Hz repetitive tests with self-breakdown jitter remaining in 2.3%-3% without insulation failure prove the excellent performance of this switch. Key design innovations are systematically investigated, including electrode geometry and material composition for jitter suppression, gas discharge-compatible insulation strategies, dynamic gas purification for humidity and plasma-induced by-product mitigation, and robust hermetic sealing with low-impedance electrical contacts. This study builds up the framework for the design of such type switch by revealing the physical mechanism behind.
