Abstract:
Asthma in older adults is frequently underdiagnosed and presents unique challenges due to age-related physiologic changes, comorbidities, and socioeconomic barriers. This review evaluates asthma phenotypes, diagnostic approaches, and treatment strategies in the elderly, emphasizing the impact of conditions like depression, sleep disorders, and cognitive decline. The Supporting Asthma Self-Management Behaviors in Older Adults trial highlights the value of patient empowerment and shared decision-making in improving outcomes. The study proposes the ABCDE Framework-Addressing Basics, Challenges, Depression, and patient-centered Education-to guide comprehensive asthma care in older adults and improve disease control, adherence, and overall quality of life.
