Supraventricular Arrhythmias in the Child with a Structurally Normal Heart

Abstract:
Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is commonly seen in children with structurally normal hearts. Understanding the possible mechanisms of SVT, including re-entry, enhanced automaticity, and triggered activity, and their associated responses to common therapeutic modalities can aid the clinician in tailoring the acute management strategy. Acute management of SVT is dependent on patient stability and the likely arrhythmia substrate. The overall prognosis for children with SVT is favorable with the potential for spontaneous resolution in infants and young children. The use of catheter ablation can provide a permanent cure in appropriately selected patients unlikely to have spontaneous resolution of their arrhythmia.
