A new online research certificate program was developed for health profession trainees. The curriculum improved learner confidence and satisfaction, filling a need for accessible research training.
Area of Science:
- Health Professions Education
- Medical Education Research
Background:
- Limited availability of brief, accessible, and free introductory research training for health profession trainees.
- Need for resources supporting learners with diverse research experience levels.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) Research Certificate program.
- To create an interdisciplinary, online, cost-free curriculum with modules under 30 minutes.
Main Methods:
- Explored existing medical and pharmacy student curricula to identify foundational research topics.
- Vetted freely available online resources and created original content for 8 modules.
- Developed evaluation processes for the curriculum.
Main Results:
- The MAHEC Research Certificate Curriculum was implemented in Graduate Medical Education (GME) and other programs.
- Learner confidence significantly improved across all 8 research topics post-module completion.
- Participants reported high satisfaction and likelihood to recommend the modules.
Conclusions:
- The curriculum addresses the need for free, brief, accessible, and asynchronous online research training.
- It serves as a supplement for existing training, a review for researchers, and an introduction for novices.
- Offers an automatically generated certificate of completion.
