Vision

59.2K
Vision is the result of light being detected and transduced into neural signals by the retina of the eye. This information is then further analyzed and interpreted by the brain. First, light enters the front of the eye and is focused by the cornea and lens onto the retina—a thin sheet of neural tissue lining the back of the eye. Because of refraction through the convex lens of the eye, images are projected onto the retina upside-down and reversed.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Radiology
  • Spatial Computing

Background:

  • Medical imaging education requires innovative tools for effective training.
  • Spatial computing presents a novel approach to visualize complex medical data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and user experience of Apple Vision Pro (AVP) in radiology education.
  • To assess the utility of AVP for medical imaging tasks like image viewing and EHR navigation.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective observational pilot study involving 25 radiology physicians.
  • Participants used AVP for clinical applications, completing pre- and post-use surveys.
  • Wilcoxon signed-rank tests analyzed survey data; onboarding and session times were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Mean time to device competency was 4.0 minutes; average session time was 14.1 minutes.
  • Significant improvement in perceived utility for multidisciplinary conferences (p=0.039).
  • Majority rated overall experience and ease of use ≥4/5; 84% cited ease of use, 80% efficiency for future adoption.

Conclusions:

  • Apple Vision Pro demonstrates short-term feasibility and usability for medical imaging education among physician trainees.
  • The study supports further investigation of spatial computing in clinical workflows and radiology training.
