Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Summary

Background:

  • Cochlear implantation (CI) is a common intervention for hearing loss.
  • The impact of CI on language and memory in children with ANSD requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare language and memory skills in pediatric cochlear implant users with and without auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, comparative observational study was conducted at a tertiary referral center.
  • Twenty-six children with CIs were evaluated: 11 with ANSD and 15 without.
  • Language skills were assessed using the Test of Language Development-Primary: Fourth Edition (TOLD-P:4), and memory using the Working Memory Scale (WMS).

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in various language index scores (listening, organizing, speaking, grammar, semantics, oral language) between CI users with and without ANSD.
  • Verbal memory standard scores also did not differ significantly between the two groups.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric cochlear implant users with ANSD exhibit language and memory abilities comparable to CI users without ANSD.
  • These findings indicate that cochlear implantation is effective in supporting language and memory development, even with the auditory processing difficulties characteristic of ANSD.
