Abstract:
Insufficient cough in patients with neurological disorders leads to secretion stagnation in the airways, increasing the risk of recurrent and potentially life-threatening respiratory tract infections (RTIs). Respiratory failure, including RTI, is the leading cause of death among these patients. This review explains and systemises the interventions to manage secretion stagnation, and schematically presents a recommended course of action. Interventions should always consider the patient's co-morbidities. Due to sparse data, further research regarding selected interventions is needed.
