Hemoptysis is a frequent cause of consultation in general practice and emergency settings. In most cases, hemoptysis is minor and has a good prognosis. The challenge lies in identifying patients who need further investigations and/or hospital admission. Hypoxemia is the primary severity criterion justifying hospitalization in a monitored unit. The following factors justify transferring the patient to the emergency department for hospitalization: early recurrence of hemoptysis, respiratory comorbidity, anticoagulant therapy or coagulopathy, visible abnormality on initial imaging (X-ray or CT scan), and inability to reassess the situation within the next 24-48 hours.
