Higher expectancy beliefs and values in Middle Eastern female students did not automatically lead to better cardiometabolic health or increased moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Targeted approaches are needed to improve health behaviors.
Area of Science:
- Health Behavior Science
- Exercise Physiology
- Public Health
Background:
- Examines associations between expectancy beliefs/values and cardiometabolic risk factors (body composition, blood pressure) in Middle Eastern female college students.
- Investigates the relationship between these beliefs and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA).
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the complex interplay between psychological factors (expectancy beliefs/values) and physical health outcomes.
- To identify potential targets for interventions aimed at improving health behaviors in this demographic.
Main Methods:
- 221 female college students in Abu Dhabi participated.
- Utilized questionnaires for expectancy beliefs/values, devices for MVPA, body composition analysis, and blood pressure monitoring.
- Employed path modeling to test variable relationships.
Main Results:
- Expectancy beliefs negatively correlated with fat mass and positively with muscle/bone mass.
- Expectancies for success inversely linked with systolic BP; importance value positively linked with body composition.
- Higher interest value correlated with increased MVPA; models explained significant variations in measured variables.
Conclusions:
- Higher expectancy beliefs do not guarantee improved health outcomes like reduced fat mass or increased muscle mass.
- Emphasizes the need for multifaceted strategies to enhance health behavior and MVPA in Middle Eastern female college students.
