Artesunate treatment showed potential in improving fibrosis and inflammation in a rat model of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). While not significantly improving exercise capacity, it reduced right ventricular hypertrophy and pulmonary arteriolar wall thickness.

- Artesunate treatment in bleomycin-induced IPF rats significantly reduced RVH (0.37 ± 0.03 vs. 0.44 ± 0.02) and pulmonary arteriolar wall thickness (p<0.001).
- Significant improvements were observed in fibrosis and inflammatory changes in the bleomycin + artesunate group (p<0.001).
- While exercise capacity showed intergroup differences (p=0.001), no significant difference was found between bleomycin and bleomycin + artesunate groups (p=0.95).
Conclusions:
- Artesunate demonstrates therapeutic potential by ameliorating fibrosis, inflammation, RVH, and pulmonary arteriolar thickening in a rat model of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis.
- Further research is warranted to explore artesunate's efficacy as a treatment for IPF.
- Artesunate may offer a novel therapeutic strategy for managing key pathological features of IPF.
