Electrochemical Defluorinative Alkylation of Alkenes with Trifluoromethyl Arenes

Abstract:
Defluorinative alkylation of alkenes is a useful reaction for converting trifluoromethyl compounds into diverse materials. Photoredox chemistry has been established as an efficient protocol to achieve difluoroalkylation reactions of alkenes using trifluoromethyl arenes as reagents. In comparison, electrochemistry has not achieved comparable progress. In this work, we reported a zinc-cation-promoted electrochemical monodefluorinative alkylation of alkenes using trifluoromethyl arenes as reagents. The reaction tolerated a series of functional groups, including pyridine, silyl, aniline, and cyclopropanes, and the isolated yield reached 90%.

Electrophilic Addition to Alkynes: Halogenation
Halogenation is another class of electrophilic addition reactions where a halogen molecule gets added across a π bond. In alkynes, the presence of two π bonds allows for the addition of two equivalents of halogens (bromine or chlorine). The addition of the first halogen molecule forms a trans-dihaloalkene as the major product and the cis isomer as the minor product. Subsequent addition of the second equivalent yields the tetrahalide.
