Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

14.2K
In 1971, Peter Perlman and Eva Engvall developed an Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA or EIA). ELISA differs from western blot in that the assays are conducted in microtiter plates or in vivo rather than on an absorbent membrane.
There are many different types of ELISAs, but they all involve an antibody molecule whose constant region binds an enzyme, leaving the variable region free to bind its specific antigen.  Enzyme-substrate reaction allows the antigen to be visualized or...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Exercise Science
  • Higher Education Wellness

Background:

  • Regular physical activity is crucial for college students' long-term health.
  • Most US college students do not meet federal Physical Activity Guidelines.
  • The Exercise is Medicine® On Campus initiative aims to increase campus-wide physical activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if students at Exercise is Medicine® On Campus-recognized universities are more likely to meet federal physical activity guidelines compared to those at non-recognized institutions.
  • To analyze the association between institutional recognition and adherence to aerobic and combined aerobic/strength physical activity recommendations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized self-reported data from the fall 2019 American College Health Association-National College Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (ACHA-NCHA III).
  • Included data from 38,098 students across 41 universities.
  • Employed adjusted logistic regression models to compare physical activity guideline adherence between recognized and non-recognized campuses.

Main Results:

  • Students at Exercise is Medicine® On Campus campuses demonstrated significantly higher odds of meeting aerobic Physical Activity Guidelines (AOR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.32-1.51).
  • Students at recognized campuses also showed higher odds of meeting combined aerobic/strength Physical Activity Guidelines (AOR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04-1.17).

Conclusions:

  • Exercise is Medicine® On Campus recognition is associated with increased physical activity levels among college students.
  • These findings highlight the potential institutional impact of the initiative on student health behaviors.
  • Further evaluation is recommended to understand the full impact of campus-wide physical activity promotion efforts.
