Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Electrical Engineering

Background:

  • Flexible electronics and 5G/6G devices require materials with combined transparency, conductivity, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding.
  • Achieving high optical transparency, low sheet resistance, and effective broadband shielding simultaneously is challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize and characterize flexible Indium Oxide/Silver/Indium Oxide (IAI) structures for transparent EMI shielding applications.
  • To optimize the IAI structure for enhanced optical, electrical, and shielding properties.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of flexible IAI thin films on polyethylene terephthalate substrates.
  • Comprehensive characterization of optical transmittance, sheet resistance, optical haze, and broadband EMI shielding (10 MHz to 1 THz).
  • Evaluation of mechanical resilience under repeated bending.

Main Results:

  • Optimized IAI structure (13.2 ± 1.1 nm Ag interlayer) achieved 82.59% optical transmittance at 500 nm and low sheet resistance of 6.4 ± 0.8 Ω/sq.
  • Insignificant optical haze (1.04%) and uniform broadband EMI shielding of 25-30 dB from radiowave to terahertz frequencies.
  • Demonstrated outstanding mechanical resilience, maintaining performance after repeated bending.

Conclusions:

  • Flexible IAI thin films present a promising solution for transparent EMI shielding.
  • The unique combination of optical, electrical, mechanical, and shielding properties makes IAI suitable for advanced telecommunications and flexible optoelectronics.
